Errorless learning is a teaching approach that prevents incorrect responses rather than correcting them after the fact. The learner is prompted immediately, before they have the chance to respond incorrectly, and the prompt is systematically faded until they respond independently.
The name is a slight overstatement — errors still happen — but the intent is real: minimize the number of times a learner practices the wrong answer.
Why practicing errors matters
The rationale is straightforward. Every time a learner emits an incorrect response, that response is being rehearsed. If it happens to be followed by attention, correction, or escape from the task, it may also be reinforced. For learners who acquire skills slowly, a handful of errors early in acquisition can become a persistent competing response that takes far longer to undo than it would have taken to prevent.

The four techniques
Most-to-least prompting

Reliable and conservative. The cost is that it can be slow, and it carries the highest prompt-dependence risk if fading is not planned deliberately.
Prompt delay
Present the instruction and the prompt together at first, then insert a delay between the instruction and the prompt so the learner has an opportunity to respond independently before help arrives.
- Constant time delay — a fixed delay, commonly zero seconds for the first several trials and then a consistent interval such as four seconds thereafter.
- Progressive time delay — the delay grows gradually, one second at a time, across trials or sessions.
Prompt delay is often the most efficient errorless procedure, because the learner gets a genuine opportunity to respond independently on every trial after the first block.
Stimulus fading
Exaggerate a feature of the correct stimulus to make it obvious, then fade that exaggeration until the stimuli look normal. Teaching discrimination between two cards by making the correct one twice the size, then shrinking it to match.
Stimulus shaping
Change the form of the stimulus gradually from something the learner already discriminates to the target stimulus. Less common in routine clinical practice than the other three but useful for difficult visual discriminations.
The real risk: prompt dependence
Every errorless procedure carries the same failure mode. A learner who is always prompted can learn to wait for the prompt rather than to respond. The prompt becomes the discriminative stimulus, and independent responding never emerges.
Prompt dependence is not an argument against errorless teaching. It is an argument for planning the fade before you start, and it looks like this in practice:
- Write the fading criterion into the program. Not fade when ready but after two consecutive sessions at 90% or above, move to the next prompt level.
- Track prompt level as data, not just correct and incorrect. A program showing 95% correct means very different things at full physical prompting and at independent.
- Watch the latency. A learner whose response latency is creeping up toward the prompt delay is waiting for help. That is the early signal, and it appears before accuracy drops.
That last point is why recording prompt level alongside accuracy matters more in errorless teaching than anywhere else. A percent-correct graph with no prompt-level dimension cannot distinguish a learner who has acquired a skill from one who has learned to wait.
When errorless learning is the right choice
- New discriminations with a high chance of error — early receptive identification, matching, letter or number discrimination.
- Learners with a history of escape-maintained problem behavior during instruction. Reducing errors reduces the aversiveness of the teaching situation, which reduces the motivation to escape it.
- Targets where an error is genuinely costly — safety skills, or anything where the wrong response is dangerous or hard to undo.
- Learners who show slow acquisition under trial-and-error and appear to be practicing a persistent error pattern.
When trial-and-error is fine, or better
Errorless teaching is not universally superior, and treating it as the default costs time.
- Learners who acquire skills quickly often do just as well with least-to-most prompting, which gives more independent practice per trial.
- Skills where error detection is part of the skill — self-correction, problem solving, checking work.
- Maintenance and fluency work, where the target is no longer acquisition and independent responding is the whole point.
- When the learner tolerates errors well and the error rate is not producing frustration or escape.
Least-to-most prompting is the honest alternative here, and it is not the same thing as unstructured trial and error: the learner gets an opportunity to respond independently first, and help escalates only as needed.
Running it well
Three things separate errorless teaching that works from errorless teaching that produces prompt-dependent learners:
- The prompt actually guarantees the response. A prompt the learner can fail is not an errorless procedure — it is least-to-most with extra steps.
- The fade is scheduled, not improvised. Written criteria, applied consistently across staff.
- Reinforcement differentiates. Independent responses should contact more reinforcement than prompted ones, or there is no contingency favoring independence.
That third one is frequently missed. If a prompted correct response and an independent correct response earn identical reinforcement, the learner has no reason to prefer working unaided.
